The study examines the mortality, the causes of early death and the inequality in front of death in Hargita County, all placed in an international context. The unfavorable demographic conditions cause an important socio-economic problem and may be the source of political tension. Two main challenges are to be faced in the 21st century: one is the demographic, and the other is the climatic challenge. The demographic challenge appears on two levels: on a global level it means overpopulation, while in post-industrial societies – and mainly in Europe – it means the ageing of population and thus the rise of social costs and the decline in competitiveness. According to the calculations of the UN, the demographic weight of Europe is going to decline throughout the century.
